I have for some time used a GMail notifier from Google which loaded at startup and told you when you had a new message, now I always have Firefox open and I came across this addon today, it sits in the status bar of your Firefox browser and when you receive a message a little window like the one in the image above shows with details of where it came from and the message text, an advantage over the system tray notifier that I have been using, is tha ability to click the message and the message loading.
Not only is this good for notifing, you can also get a full rundown of your mailbox by hovering over the area at the bottom right of the window, this gives you details on labels and a list of all unread mail.
You can download it now from: http://www.longfocus.com/firefox/gmanager/

With GMail now available for sign up from anyone, I think it is important that you know what you are signing up to before going ahead and changing.
I have used Gmail for about 2 years now, and it has not once let me down, it is simple to use, everything is clear just like Google and everything is in the right place and easy to find. You also get over 2.5GB and it is forever increasing (just to put it in context, I have over 2000 emails in my account and it has taken up 9% and that is with a whole host of attachments.)
You do not have folders like you do in Yahoo, but you have a system called Labels which allows you to assign a label to an email, then you simply click Archive and it will store it under that label, so in theory acting like a folder.
Now, I have used a lot of email services in the past few years including MSN (now Windows Live), Yahoo and many more and Google Mail has come out top, it may not be as attractive as other services but it is both fast and secure.
Spam protection is excellent in GMail, no spam has ever passed the filters and got into my inbox and I have never had an incident where a message in the spam folder wasn’t spam.
So, my overall opinion, GMail is by far the best email service around and I believe it cannot be beaten, it has all the features most people will need, and of course if you sign up for a GMail account you are signing up for a Google Account which means you have access to a whole host of great services including Google Docs and Spreadsheets. So go to www.gmail.com now and sign up to Google.
